Indore: connecting source-separated waste with a city gas market
A documented municipal Bio-CNG example showing why collection quality, processing and offtake need to be designed together.

What the public record establishes
The February 2022 inauguration release describes a plant designed to process 550 tonnes/day of segregated wet organic waste, with expected CNG production of around 17,000 kg/day. A September 2024 PIB feature describes the plant in operation and reports 17,000 kg/day of Bio-CNG. These are government-published figures, not measurements independently verified by Altpreneur.
The inauguration release identifies a public-private partnership involving Indore Municipal Corporation and Indo Enviro Integrated Solutions. It also describes the municipal corporation's commitment to purchase at least half the CNG produced for city-bus use, with the balance intended for the open market.
Why the collection system matters
Our analysis: source separation is part of the process basis. A wet-waste plant depends on the material collected, the consistency of segregation and the ability to remove unacceptable contamination. A municipality-wide collection system is therefore an operating asset, not simply an upstream service outside the plant fence.
For a proposed project, the equivalent questions are how collection quality is measured, who controls contamination, what happens to rejected loads and whether the receiving line is designed for the actual material. The headline wet-tonne capacity does not answer those questions.
Why the gas buyer belongs in the project design
Our analysis: the documented municipal purchase arrangement connects production with an identified use. A new project should likewise establish the delivery point, demand profile, quality conditions and commercial responsibilities before finalising compression, storage and transport.
The precise public-private structure is not a template for every project. An agricultural plant selling to an oil marketing company, a city-gas network or an industrial customer faces different contractual and logistical interfaces.
What should not be transferred to another plant
The reported output should not be divided by the wet-waste tonnage and treated as a universal yield for Napier, straw, dung or press mud. Feed properties, losses, operating conditions and the measurement boundary differ. A separate sample-based mass balance is needed.
