Equipment erection and commissioning

Bring machinery packages into service through planned installation, interface checks, functional trials and documented operating handover.

The engineering context

What the assignment needs to resolve

Installation quality affects alignment, sealing, vibration, electrical reliability and maintainability long after the equipment starts. Erection begins with receipt inspection and foundation checks, followed by the manufacturer's installation requirements and the plant's approved work procedures.

Commissioning should progress from individual component checks to functional systems and then process operation. Wet tests, controls testing and performance trials answer different questions. A motor rotating correctly does not prove that the assembled system can handle the actual slurry or gas duty.

Commissioning evidence by stage

Altpreneur scope

How we approach the work

01

Readiness

Review foundation dimensions, lifting access, vendor requirements, utilities and work permits before equipment arrives.

02

Installation

Coordinate mechanical erection, alignment, supports, piping interfaces, cabling and instrument connections against approved drawings.

03

Testing

Organise inspections, authorised pressure or leak tests, rotation checks, controls and interlock verification. Use vendor and project procedures for acceptance.

04

Start-up support

Coordinate package start-up with the plant operating team. Record settings, training, outstanding work and maintenance requirements.

Decisions worth getting right

Define readiness before mobilising

The site should have the access, supporting works, lifting plan, power and responsible supervision needed for the planned activity. Mobilisation without readiness adds cost without advancing the critical work.

Record defects by consequence

Separate safety-critical and operational blockers from minor finishing items. The responsible engineer determines which defects prevent energisation or process introduction.

Repeat tests after material changes

Changes to control logic, equipment settings or piping can invalidate earlier test results. The test register should identify the configuration that was actually verified.

Assignment outputs

What you receive

  • Site-readiness and installation checklists
  • Inspection and test records
  • Controls and interlock verification records
  • Package start-up and handover report

To begin

Useful starting information

  • Equipment drawings and vendor manuals
  • Site programme and lifting arrangements
  • Utilities and responsible client personnel

Scope and responsibility

Specialist lifting, statutory inspections, consumables, civil rectification and performance guarantees must be allocated in the work order. Commissioning cannot compensate for unsuitable equipment selection.

Common questions

Can you commission equipment supplied by another vendor?

Subject to document access, vendor support and a defined responsibility boundary, a separate installation or commissioning assignment can be evaluated.

What must be ready before gas trials?

Mechanical completion, approved test procedures, utilities, protective systems, trained personnel and required authorisations must be confirmed by the responsible team.
